Respite Care

Cacti

Respite care supports you and your carer by giving you both a break for a short period of time.

It also provides an opportunity for you to try out and make decisions on moving to aged care living.

You will be entitled to the same clinical care and support services as permanent residents including your own room, 24-hour registered nursing care, personal care, and hotel-type services including meals, laundry and social activities, and on-call services as and when you need it.

You can access up to 63 days of subsidized respite care in a financial year. This can be extended this by 21 days at a time, with further approval from the aged care assessor.

Check Your Eligibility

You will need a face-to-face assessment by the Aged Care Assessment Team to determine your eligibility.

You can go to My Aged Care website to check if you are eligible for an assessment OR apply online for an assessment, or call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 to get started.

Costs Associated with Respite Care

You are required to pay a basic daily fee for respite care.

You won’t have to pay any accommodation costs or means-tested care fees.

After respite care, if you wish to transit into permanent care, further negotiation of care fees is required and a new agreement needs to be signed.

Read more about the costs and fees on the aged care homes costs page on My Aged Care website.
